Orthopedic Surgery Elective

This elective provides experience in orthopedic surgery and the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.

Baylor Scott & White Health offers a two-week and a four-week elective in orthopedic surgery to fourth-year medical students. Baylor University Medical Center Dallas, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, serves as a clinical training and research campus for Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine.

Applicants from LCME-accredited medical schools are given preference in filling positions.

We accept one student per rotation.

Curriculum

Students participate in the ambulatory and surgical treatment of common orthopedic problems. Students also assist in surgery, management of closed fractures and recognition common fracture patterns seen in the community setting.

Students could participate in orthopedic trauma call at a level dependent upon their interest. 

How to Apply

We use the AAMC Visting Student Application Service (VSAS) to electronically accept applications, preferred electives and dates.

Applications are accepted beginning May 1. 

Because of the volume of applications we receive, we do not offer or schedule an elective until the VSAS application is complete and all required additional documents are received.

Prerequisites

Students must be in good standing with their home school and must have completed all third-year course requirements and be eligible to start their fourth year at their respective medical schools by the time they begin their externship.
