Infectious Diseases

We provide consultations to primary care physicians and specialists to treat serious infectious diseases in every organ system.

Baylor Scott & White Health has board-certified physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases and are dedicated to providing excellent clinical care, teaching and research.

Infectious diseases are caused by organisms from bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites that are transmitted directly or indirectly from humans, animals or insect vectors. The infectious diseases field is becoming more global given mechanisms of transportation and transmission and includes infections from AIDS to Zika.

Services

Most often, treatment and management options include pain management, vaccination and medication. Through our electronic medical record (EMR), we are able to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of specialists should your patient need additional specialty treatment.

In addition, we offer specialty services:

  • Inpatient consultative services
  • Outpatient clinical care
  • Antimicrobial stewardship
  • Infection control and prevention

HIV Management

We evaluate patients with both a new diagnosis of HIV infection as well as those with established infection seeking care. Your patients will be evaluated for the stage of infection and need for anti-retroviral therapy. Patients will also be worked up for the presence of opportunistic infections or the need for prophylaxis of opportunistic infections.

Patients with HIV will be followed over time by a physician for response to therapy and to monitor for toxicity or occurrence of new infections/complications.

Outpatient Antibiotic Therapy (Infusion) Management

We offer outpatient treatment and monitoring of your patients who are receiving intravenous antibiotics.

Pre-travel Immunization

At select Central Texas locations, we can provide a personalized review of your patient’s travel itinerary, counseling on infection prevention measures, pre-travel immunization and antibiotic prophylaxis. We also provide diagnosis and treatment to returning travelers who feel unwell or have fever.

Hepatitis C Management

We evaluate patients for eligibility and coordinate in conjunction with the gastroenterology and hepatology teams their care during treatment.

Transplant Management

We work in collaboration with transplant services to prepare for transplant and assist with management of infectious complications.
