Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)

New procedure to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous condition that occurs when the prostate enlarges and constricts or obstructs urine flow. BPH affects nearly half of men over age 50 and approximately 80 percent of men in their 80s.

Traditional treatment methods include medications and surgery, such as transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) or open simple prostatectomy.

Baylor Scott & White offers a new, minimally invasive procedure called Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), which offers patients immediate improved urine flow in addition to long-term relief

How HoLEP Works

The procedure uses a laser that targets the portion of the enlarged prostate that is affecting urine flow. The laser slices that portion into small, easily removable pieces.

Not only do patients experience immediate relief, they also typically experience reduced blood loss, a shorter hospital stay (generally 24 hours) and faster recovery when compared to traditional surgical treatment options.

How HoLEP Can Benefit Your Patients

  • Ability to treat any size prostate gland with minimal bleeding
  • A re-treatment rate of less than 2 percent
  • Early, immediate relief of symptoms and fast return to normal activity. Patients usually go back to work within two to three days and can resume their physical exercise within two weeks.
  • Next-day catheter removal in most of the cases with less than 24 hours hospital stay.
  • Minimal pain, requiring only oral pain control
  • Fewer potential complications. The holmium laser technology offers a low-depth of penetration of less than half of 1 mm, which causes less damage to the underlying healthy tissue and lowers the risk for excessive bleeding.
