Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Elective

Our elective provides exposure to the rehabilitative care of patients with stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputation, neuromuscular diseases and musculoskeletal problems.

Baylor Scott & White Health offers this four-week elective in physical medicine and rehabilitation to fourth-year medical students. Baylor University Medical Center Dallas, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, serves as a clinical training and research campus for Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine.

Applicants from LCME-accredited medical schools are given preference in filling positions.

We accept three students per rotation.

Curriculum

This elective is designed to expose the student to various aspects of physical medicine and rehabilitation. The elective can be individualized according to the student's interests.

Students participate in patient care in both the inpatient and outpatient setting with the attending physician and/or the resident on the rotation. Exposure to the rehabilitative care of patients with stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputation, neuromuscular diseases, and musculoskeletal problems is available. Exposure to electrodiagnostics, pediatric rehabilitation and other educational opportunities may also be available if the students desire. Students also attend weekly didactic sessions with the residents.

Goals and Objectives

  • Perform a complete rehabilitation history and physical exam
  • Understand the interdisciplinary treatment approach to patients disabled by acute spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, amputation and other neurologic disabilities
  • Understand the etiology and treatment of common medical problems in rehabilitative medicine (pressure sores, DVT, autonomic hyperreflexia, spasticity, neurogenic bowel and bladder)
  • Exposure to therapy prescription writing
  • Understand the workup and treatment options for patients with spine and musculoskeletal disorders

How to Apply

We use the AAMC Visting Student Application Service (VSAS) to electronically accept applications, preferred electives and dates.

Applications are accepted beginning May 1. 

Because of the volume of applications we receive, we do not offer or schedule an elective until the VSAS application is complete and all required additional documents are received.

Prerequisites

Students must be in good standing with their home school and must have completed all third-year course requirements and be eligible to start their fourth year at their respective medical schools by the time they begin their externship.
